Understanding Somatic Experiencing as a Therapeutic Approach
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach that aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. Created by Peter Levine, PhD, SE is a form of alternative therapy that focuses on treating trauma and stressor-related disorders like PTSD. The primary goal of SE is to help individuals reprogram their body’s primitive survival instincts to feel a greater sense of connection, safety, and ease. This is achieved by slowly and gradually re-entering a traumatized or dissociated body at the individual’s own pace, using natural SE practices and tools. Through exploring and resolving physical sensations and experiences, I have found that SE can help individuals overcome the effects of trauma and stress on their bodies and minds.
SE is founded on several key principles and techniques that distinguish it from other therapeutic approaches. One of these principles is the use of body awareness as a powerful tool and intervention in therapy. My goal is to establish an atmosphere of gentle acceptance and help my clients identify body indicators of unconscious beliefs. Additionally, SE incorporates positive memory recall as a technique to help individuals manage distress and triggers. Unlike traditional talk therapy, I use SE to engage both the mind and body to promote healing and resolution.
Somatic Experiencing differs from other therapeutic approaches in its focus on the body’s physical sensations and experiences. Rather than solely focusing on thoughts or emotions, I work together with my clients to explore what is being experienced in the body and gradually move towards resolution. Other body-centered approaches to treating trauma, such as sensorimotor psychotherapy, share some similarities with SE. However, SE is unique in its emphasis on natural and gradual re-entry into the body to promote healing and resolution of trauma and stress-related symptoms.
The Benefits of Somatic Experiencing in Addressing Trauma and Stress
SE aims to address autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, which can result from traumatic experiences. By allowing healing without the full retelling of traumatic events, SE offers a gentler way to heal trauma and PTSD. Through resourcing and supporting the internal organic intelligence of the body to orient, SE can help resolve stress and tension. I have found that this approach can be particularly helpful for individuals who have experienced chronic stress or post-traumatic stress.
Somatic Experiencing can also be effective in addressing anxiety and depression. By gently guiding my clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions, SE can help them improve their emotional regulation and resilience. A 2021 study found that SE training can improve practitioners’ resiliency, which has promising implications for other professionals with a high risk of burnout. Moreover, resilience and hardiness have been found to mitigate the effects of trauma exposure, improve neuroendocrine functioning, and improve coping. Therefore, incorporating SE into therapy sessions can help individuals build resilience and improve emotional well-being.
Overall, Somatic Experiencing offers a gentle and effective way to heal trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, chronic pain, and other symptoms of traumatic stress. By reprogramming the body’s primitive survival instincts, SE can help individuals feel a greater sense of connection, safety, and ease in their daily lives. Moreover, by focusing on physical sensations in the body, SE can address both psychological and physical conditions and symptoms such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. As a result, incorporating SE into my therapeutic interventions has been an effective way to improve overall well-being.
The Process of Somatic Experiencing Therapy
Somatic Experiencing is a body-mind therapy that can effectively help individuals heal from trauma by using bodily interventions. The therapy involves assessing bodily sensations, gestures, and movements to build resilience through strengthening the mind-body connection. The process of Somatic Experiencing therapy begins with an assessment and treatment planning phase, where my goal is to evaluate my client’s needs and develops a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. This phase is crucial for establishing a strong therapeutic relationship and setting goals for the therapy.
During Somatic Experiencing therapy sessions, various techniques are used to help my clients release and regulate their physical and emotional responses to trauma. These techniques can include massage, posture work, exercises to correct imbalances, breathing exercises, dance, mindfulness, and other body movement techniques. In this process I use a framework known as SIBAM (Sensation, Imagery, Behavior, Affect, and Meaning) to help my clients explore and process their experiences. The goal of these techniques is to help clients become more aware of their bodily sensations and emotions, and to develop greater resilience and capacity to manage stress.
Integration and follow-up care are essential components of Somatic Experiencing therapy. My goal is to work together with my clients to integrate the insights and changes achieved during therapy into the client’s daily life. This may involve developing new coping skills and strategies for managing stress, as well as addressing any ongoing physical or emotional symptoms related to trauma. Regular follow-up sessions are also recommended to ensure that the client continues to make progress and maintain their gains. In summary, Somatic Experiencing has been a powerful tool for helping individuals heal from trauma and develop greater resilience and well-being.
